Sonia Bolaños // Sevilla, San Agustin, Huila, Colombia
Fully washed Pink Bourbon // 1780 masl

Sonia Bolaños has been working in coffee since she was 14, when she’d head from school to neighboring farms to pick cherries and help support her family. Today, she manages four hectares in San Agustín, Huila, growing coffee alongside her husband, Deimar Muñoz. Together, they’ve steadily built their family farm into something pretty special.

This washed Pink Bourbon marks Sonia’s first export of the variety to North America, and we’re stoked to have been introduced to it through the amazing folks at Semilla, a specialty coffee import and advocacy company based in Montreal, Canada. Grown at 1,780 meters, Sonia ferments her cherries for 12 hours before depulping. She then follows up with another 40 hours of dry fermentation. After rinsing and draining, the coffee dries slowly on raised beds for 15–20 days.

Sonia also spends time at the cupping table with Semilla's Colombia sourcing partners at Monkaaba, learning more about her coffees and putting that feedback to work each harvest. Those connections, along with Semilla’s commitment to buying multiple quality grades from participating growers, have helped her build a more stable market for her coffee.

Semilla and Monkaaba are doing the kind of work we love getting behind. They work alongside smallholder producers to develop their craft, build lasting relationships, and earn recognition for what they grow.
